Once upon a time...
There was a town in Maine called Storybrooke. It seems like a perfectly normal town, except for the fact its residents are not from this world. They are the characters from the fairy tales you heard growing up. However, their true stories are not exactly as you were told. The Evil Queen from the tale Snow White cast a curse, bringing these characters to this world, only they don't remember their lives in their land, their memories replaced with new ones, with fake identities. Time stood still for 28 years, until the savior arrived in town, the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, a woman who grew up in our world, never knowing her heritage, Emma Swan.
Time began moving again when she decided to stay in town, after being brought to Stoyrbrooke by her son Henry Mills, and the residents slowly began realizing that something was wrong, but they were not sure exactly what. For a few weeks the curse began unraveling. Emma became a deputy under Sheriff Humbert, and the Evil Queen tried to prevent the curse from breaking.
However, as circumstances change, Mr. Gold saw a need to speed up the return of magic and sent one of his henchmen to fetch the True Love Potion from the dragon underneath the library, and soon he dropped it in the well, bringing magic to Storybrooke, even though the curse has yet to be broken.
That is where we are in our tale. Magic has been brought back, but memories have yet to be brought back. No one remembers their past lives, but with magic, it is hard to deny the fact that what Henry had been telling them was true.
Of course, those who remember, such as Gold and Regina are trying to keep things under the radar, to prevent people from realizing such a thing, but there will always be those who see it, as well as those who refuse to see it. Those who choose to believe are split into two factions: one that wants to break the curse and bring back their memories, and one group who does not want their memories back and they only wish to remain normal. Some tried to leave, but they found that at the town line someone created a magical barrier preventing anyone from leaving Storybrooke.
These factions are very small, and most of Storybrooke is turning the blind cheek... but eventually everything will get out and when it does... well things might not end up pretty...
