General Personality:
Zanith finds a lot of things to be boring and dissatisfying, but every once in a while when he finds something he likes, he tries to lock it down as fast as possible. He's afraid of loss and abandonment. It can be assumed that it might have something to do with the death of his mother, even though he has no memory of it now that he resides in Storybrooke. He throws his whole heart into what-ever he cares about and can come on a bit too strongly. From a distance he might come off as an uncaring guy. From a closer view you'll find that Zan has more emotions than he knows what to do with.
Fun is something Zan strives for in life. With his boring job and lack of much money, he's always trying to make fun for himself. This doesn't always give him the best reputation. It tends to lead him down a path of petty crimes like teepeeing someone's house or painting things that don't quite belong on brick walls in public places. He's constantly being told to grow up, but something inside of him keeps holding him back. There was a point in his life when he was willing to, but he no longer recalls that time or his reason.
He's not exactly the type of guy to just stick up for a random stranger that's being picked on, but when it comes to someone he's close to, he'll go way past the extra mile in that sort of situation. He's been known to get into a fight or two for the well being of a friend. He's kind of a hot head when the moment arises and can take things a little too far. He definitely regrets things later, though he tries not to let others see the disappointment he has in himself. He's extremely harsh on himself and wonders why he seems to have no control in certain situations.
History:
The big body of water covering most of the world is what Zanith had always referred to as home. For a merman, he had a pretty normal upbringing. It left him completely unsatisfied. He spent his younger years getting into trouble, searching for adventure. During his teenage years, he lost his mother to curious humans who had captured her for reasons unknown to him. He assumed it was for experimentation to try and uncover any magic secrets the merfolk might have. Humans could be such heartless creatures. That was one thing he became certain of afterwards. His adventurous spirit began to shift into a more delinquent-like stage after that incident. He was constantly defying the rules and getting into heavier trouble, causing him to have many issues with his father.
Although Zan's bad attitude and troublesome ways didn't truly come to an end, they extremity of it all lessened when he met another merman, only a few years younger than himself named Kaida. Kaida had a much more innocent way about him, and Zan became infatuated. He found himself attempting to become a better merman. Later, that infatuation intensified into something more, and Zan was all but jumping through flaming hoops trying to make himself worthy of just being near Kai.
On his obsessive path, Zan managed to get himself into training to become a guard for the royal family. He figured if he had a tough enough job, he wouldn't have time to goof off and revert back to his old ways. If he wasn't bored, there wouldn't be a need to stir things up. As soon as his training was over, it felt as though his plan was backfiring. The busier he got, the less time he was able to spend around Kai.
A year later, it was almost as if all of his goals had lost meaning. He found himself unable to even remember when the last time he had seen Kai was. Given that, Zanith decided to blow off work and find him. That was when he heard from Kaida's mother that he had left the ocean in search of a cure for an illness Zan didn't even know Kai's mother had. Kai had used half of a magic crystal that had been passed down through his family for generations from a powerful sorceress. It allowed him to switch between fin and legs as he pleased. Concerned by the fact that Kai had been gone far too long combined with his strong dislike toward humans, Zan convinced her to give him the other half of the crystal to go and search for her son. Abandoning his job completely, Zan took his first steps on land into a place called the Enchanted Forest.
Everything was confusing outside of the water. People were very different and customs were baffling. He was, without a doubt, a fish out of water. Unknown to him, something greater had been taking place during the time of his search. A curse was being spread through out the enchanted forest, tossing all of the beings into an unknown land called Storybrooke. Everyone, including himself, had lost their memories. The only difference for Zanith was that he wasn't given a new, fake life like the rest of the residents of the town. Since he wasn't supposed to be there, a place wasn't made for him. Zan woke up on the side of the road remembering only his name.
Having no idea where he was or who he was, Zan wondered around for days until finally a few strangers helped him get on his feet. He crashed in a few basements of willing helpers for a while before finally getting a job at a small convenience store, later allowing him to get his own apartment. Years passed, but it was like Zan was completely unaware.
