General Personality:
Jane hadn't always been the young woman she turned out to be. A very long time ago, she'd been an apologetic and very submissive girl who did her best to please people that were doing nothing but harming her confidence. After meeting Peter Pan, that had all changed. He gave her the confidence she needed to become a much stronger person. With that confidence, he'd also given her power. Power that had caused her to become darker as her mind went down a path of further corruption. She became vengeful with an obsession of never allowing herself to be taken advantage of again. Jane started to find enjoyment out of causing misfortune for others. The more they tried to avoid her, the more successful she felt.
Though she had never really become completely evil, she definitely believed in extreme punishment for those who had done wrong. That's why she used her magic to make dolls that had the ability to control the parents of children who'd been abused. Every so often, she'd take a batch of dolls out of Neverland to have her fun. She made her trips to the outside short, never really wanted to stay too long in a world where the cries of children were so frequent. When it came to kids, Jane always had a soft heart. Children might have been a huge weakness for her, but that weakness was nothing in comparison to the weakness her love for Pan was. That weakness allowed her mind to be warped in all the ways it had, taking her to the extreme.
To put it simply, Jane could be considered a jealous person. Growing up, she had always been jealous of those who had it much better then her, even if she believed she'd only been dished out what she deserved. When she met Pan, her jealously shifted into a different one. She often times found herself uncomfortable when around fairies or mermaids that seemed to be a little too interested in them. Only, Jane was never direct, or let her emotions loose. Often times, she'd simply befriend those she considered her enemies, making them trust her. Then, when they fully believed in Jane's kindness toward them, she'd let herself loose, punishing them as she saw fit, usually through emotional means. Jane was often this way with others she considered a threat, even if it hadn't been out of jealousy.
Fairy Tale History & Arriving in Stroybrooke:
Once upon a time, in the far past, there was a baby girl found on the steps of an old church building. All she had was a note scribbled on a tattered piece of paper saying one word. Jane. She was found by the Bancroft family, caretakers of the church with three children of their own. She grew up with them, taking their last name, only she wasn't quite part of their family. She became more like the maid, or rather a slave. She did all of the cooking, cleaning, and housework and was definitely not treated very kindly. She was spit on and pushed around, and worst of all to her, she was never allowed to leave the house aside from for church or trips to the marketplace. She was kept inside, and was always told she wasn't allowed to speak to anyone. If someone tried to make polite conversation with her, she was forced to walk away.
One day while she was out on one of her marketplace trips, a boy who seemed close to her age attempted to talk to her for no specific reason other than what she assumed was boredom. Not being allowed to talk to anyone, she just kept on walking. What she didn't know was that the boy had followed her all the way home. The boy listened, hearing her family yell at her and heard the way they were treating her. Something about that caused the boy to remember his own life, and so, later that night, he appeared at her window. The boy was suspended in the air, almost as if he was flying. Wide eyed, Jane opened the window. That was when the boy introduced himself as Peter Pan and told her that he could take her to a land were she wouldn't have to deal with the suffering of her current life. A place were it would be just the two of them, and they would be young forever. She agreed, taking his hand, and flew away to Neverland.
When Jane arrived in Neverland, there were no others aside from herself and Peter Pan. It was an empty world with many different possibilities, and she wanted to make it her own. She was often telling Peter that she had been a lost girl her entire life, always trying to find herself, and that this was a place that she didn't feel the need to be found. There was something very peaceful about it.
During her time in Neverland, Pan began to teach her magic. He taught her all kinds of things which didn't seem difficult since she some how already had the potential within herself. The more magic she learned, however, the more powerful she began to feel. The power started to make her see things in ways that she hadn't before. She had always thought she deserved how she was treated, seeing as she'd imposed on them by loosing her parents. With Peter's influence, she started to see that maybe she wasn't quite the burden that she thought she was. She did more than her share to make up for it.
More time with Peter continued to warp her thoughts until finally, one day, he'd taken her back to where she'd come from. The worst part was that she realized the family had moved on just fine without her. There wasn't a single thing in existence to honor her memory, and the place she'd spent all of her days had been turned into storage. She'd left after that, walking through her old neighborhood with tears in her eyes as she thought about how insignificant she had been to their lives. Unable to handle her sorrow, and angered by anything that could make her shed so many tears, Pan flew to her childhood home, where he found her old family. He walked to the front door and blasted it with his magic. He then slaughtered them all. Each death he inflicted upon them had been worse than the last. He then destroyed their home and burned it to ash. Afterwards, when returning to Neverland, she'd found herself almost horrified for what he'd done, but Pan insisted that they'd deserved it, and that he would never let anyone hurt her like that again. He'd convinced her, in the end, that he'd done nothing wrong, done what he had to do, and had in fact freed her from the burdens of a life she had not deserved. Peter then asked her to pick a different name, and Jane refused, simply looking at him and telling him that she was just Jane now. She'd dropped her last name, but those people hadn't given her the first one. Jane was hers. Jane grew a bit darker from that point on.
As Jane continued to go on with her life in Neverland, her confidence continued to grow. Eventually, she had begun calling herself the Queen of Neverland, and Peter her king. She had grown wild, and even as the first batch of Indians eventually found their way to Neverland, Jane had found herself constantly playing tricks on them. Not only was it fun, but she wanted to earn their respect through their fear. She didn't ever want to feel insignificant again. She even played tricks on the fairies and merfolk, not wanting to stop at just the powerless.
One day while she was out near the waterfalls collecting rocks, she noticed something shining within the water. Intrigued, she reached out to grab it, unable to reach. Not able to let it go, she jumped in after it. When she pulled it out, she realized it was a sword with a gold-ish blade. It looked as though it had been crafted by the mermaids. Finding it beautiful, she took it to the fairy folk, remembering that they could grant wishes. With a promise to leave them be, the fairies hatched a clever plot and cast powerful magic on the blade. Overjoyed and pleased with herself, she ran off to find Peter. She gave him the sword, laughing and calling it "The Sword of Pan."
Over time, after using the sword, it seemed to start making these high pitched sounds that Peter couldn't quite understand, though he delighted in the magic and whimsical sounds. However, when Peter was out one day, Jane picked up the sword to goof around it, and met a fate she hadn't been expecting. The sounds were reverberations of magic being absorbed by the blade as it built it's power until the critical moment dictated in the fairies' spell. No one could have foretold that a sword of gold, crafted by merfolk of a magical isle, magicked by wish granting fairies for a dark queen, and given to an immortal boy would be a turning point for the future of so many worlds. Unfortunately, Jane hadn't realized that until it was too late. The sword's power had finally hit it's critical point. Magic was released in a brilliant flash of light, and a trap meant to capture the immortal Pan to punish immortal Jane instead drew the girl in, trapping her within itself for centuries. Pan, after that, had assumed Jane had left, abandoning him.
Later on, Pan began collecting lost boys and trapping girls, getting darker over time. One day when he'd stumbled upon The Sword of Pan once again. He became angry and tossed it aside, giving it to a lost boy. That lost boy ended up taking the sword to the Enchanted Forest during his quest to find the truest believer. That was when the curse hit, and the sword, with Jane inside, ended up in Storybrooke. Where do all magical items in Storybrooke end up? Why, in a certain pawn shop of course. Jane, in the Sword Of Pan, is unable to do anything, but she has been very aware of all of the passing time.
