General Personality:
Whether it's staying away from his father or keeping tabs on him, Neal has a lot of determination. He's good at sticking to a cause when he knows it's important. It's a trait that can even be taken as stubborn in certain situations. He has good intentions of keeping his father from harming any innocent people. He has mixed feelings of fear and hatred for his father. Underneath it all, he still has some love for him though even he fails to realize that. His main concern is keeping his father from harming anyone else.
Though Neal may have come off as a jerk when he left Emma to go to jail, he'd did it for her own well being. He wanted nothing more then for her to do great things in the world, and was willing to sacrifice his own happiness for her future. He's actually incredibly caring and has a very protective personality. If he knew he had a son, he would have done everything he could have to be their for him. Family had always been a value of his even though he wasn't given a very good one himself (and though he still has a bad relationship with his father). It's what kept him bound to his father for so long as a child after he had become the dark one.

History:
Fairy Tale History:
Eventually, Baelfire escaped Neverland and ended up in the world without magic. He took on the name Neal Cassidy. Years later, when he's all grown up, he met a woman named Emma Swan. Both him and Emma were trying to steal the same car. The two fell in love quickly and became partners in crime, traveling all over the country. The two eventually decided they were going to retire from their life of crime, and they planned to live in Tallahassee. Neal explained that he couldn't just yet, because he was wanted for some stolen watches. Emma went to retrieve them, but in the mean time, Neal was encountered by a man named August. The man opened a typewriter with the words "I know you're Baelfire" written. August then told Neal about Emma's destiny and convinced him to let Emma get caught to fulfill her destiny. Neal asked August to give their car and all of their money to Emma, and then to send him a postcard if the plan is ever completed.
Later in life, Neal moved to New York City. August found him and told him about his plans to help Emma break the curse. Neal began to fear that his father would come looking for him when the curse was broken. After August left, Neal began to worry more and more about his father, only his worry shifted more to the well being of others. If the curse was broken, surely he would find a way to bring magic into this world. Not wanting his father's potential plans to go through, Neal made the hard decision to go to Storybrooke himself. He decided he was going to do his best to avoid his father, and stop him from any future plans he might have started cooking up. His assumption was that it might not be as hard seeing as he thought his father was missing his memories like the other residents. Though he wanted to see Emma again as well, Neal had little faith that she would ever forgive him and that their flame would be rekindled despite still being in love with her.

Fairy Tale History:
Neal Cassidy wasn't always known as Neal Cassidy. Before that, he was known as Baelfire, son of Rumplestiltskin and Milah of the Enchanted Forest. His parents made their living by spinning wool. Before he was born, his father was drafted into the ogre war. When news from a seer about a possible future frightened Rumple, he decided to injure himself to desert the war. When he returned home, Baelfire had already been born. Milah resented Rumple for abandoning the war, considering him a coward. Baby Baelfire had only just been brought into the world, and already he had been surrounded by such negativity.
As Bae got older, his mother only grew to dislike his father more. She became a heavy drinker and spent most of her time in the taverns, neglecting her motherly duties. Eventually she threw them away all together, leaving Rumple and Bae behind for Captain Hook. Not wanting to hurt Baelfire even further, Rumple tells him that his mother passed away. It might have been better to think that rather than to feel a hole from abandonment.
Right before Baelfire turned fourteen, disaster struck. All the children around his age were recruited into the war, and though Baelfire was more than willing to fight, his father wouldn't allow it. In order to keep it from happening, his father slayed Zoso and became the dark one himself. He then left Bae to witness the terror of his very own father brutally killing every solider who tried to recruit him.
As Bae continued to grow older, his father only became worse. He just continued to gain power, becoming more villainous as time passed. He would murder people and bring home the belongings of his victims for Baelfire. For the longest time, Bae went along with it until he couldn't do so any longer. Living in fear and being kept inside wasn't really living. All he wanted was to have friends and have a normal life like all of the other children.
Not much later, Baelfire heard the sound of Pan's flute and was immediately drawn to it. Pan made a deal to show Bae exactly how things really were. Rumple failed the test Pan had set up. Later, Rumple ended the ogre war, trying to make amends with his son, but Baelfire considered it too late. He explained to his father that all he wanted was for things to go back to the way they were. His father explained the dagger to him, and then proceeded to explain that can't happen unless Bae could find a way for him to part with it without dying. That's was when Bae heard of the blue fairy and sought her out. The blue fairy gave him a magic bean and told him that it could teleport them to the land without magic. When Bae opened the portal, Rumple refused to go and give up his powers. Bae then slipped into the portal, only being caught by his father, who then let go of his hand and let his son fall into the portal as it closed.
From there, Baelfire is transported to a strange world. For months, he lived on the streets off scraps of food. Eventually, he met Wendy who mistook him for a thief at first, but then realized how hungry he was. From that, she took pity on him. For weeks, Bae hid in her nursery room, and Wendy took care of him until her parents eventually found out. Surprisingly, her mother allowed him to stay as a house guest. One night, Baelfire found Wendy sitting in the window. She told him about a shadow dancing outside of her window, and Bae made her promise never to open the window for the shadow. Wendy didn't listen, and let the shadow take her away for an entire night. When she returned, she explained that the shadow wanted to take one of her brothers away permanently. When the shadow returned again later and things went south, Bae offered himself up instead of one of Wendy's brothers. The shadow took him away.
As they got close to Neverland, Bae refused to be taken any further. He lit a match to scare the shadow, which worked. The shadow dropped him. Bae fell into the water and was only there for a short time before a ship spotted him and brought him on board. It turned out to be Captain Hook's ship. When Hook learned that Baelfire was Milah's son, he decided to protect him from the Lost Boys. Hook and Baelfire bonded from there. Hook became a father-like figure to Baelfire until Bae found a drawing of his mother on the ship. Hook then told Baelfire that his father had killed his mother in anger from the two of them running away together. Hook told Baelfire that he wanted to be with him since his mother always intended to go back to him anyways, but Bae didn't believe him. He demanded to be released to the shores of Neverland. When he was, Felix found him, and upon determining that he wasn't the true believer, he sent him off with the other lost boys.
