Colin was panicking. First it had seemed that everyone in town was acting strangely. Well, at least the people in town that he had seen. Then the odd things started happening around him. The very first time something happened, he had been sitting at work, wishing he was home. Then he was there, instantly.
He actually figured he had just had some kind of memory loss from exhaustion. It wasn't the best explanation he could come up with, but it was the only one that he could really believe was practical. But, things kept happening. He hadn't actually been to work since the first incident, and had only heard that something big went down. Something where a lot of people had been hurt, or worse.
Regardless, he didn't want to go in for fear that he would be committed to the psychiatric ward. Because the random suddenness of being elsewhere was not the only problem. Colin had decided to take a walk in the woods the day before, so he had trudged out on a fairly rainy day without an umbrella. After an hour or so he felt he was a little lost, and got a little bit more than nervous. Within a few minutes he had found himself sprinting at nearly full speed through the forest, attempting to find his way.
Instead, he managed to trip over a stump he had attempted to jump, and face planted. It seemed that the forest hated him, because that was the moment it decided a tree needed to fall, straight on top of him. Naturally he had brought his hands up to in front of his face, and with reflexes he would later believe were far faster than they should have been. He did not catch the tree with his hands, no, instead, it seemed as if the tree simple stopped a few feet above him and just stayed suspended.
Colin stared wide eyed for an amount of time one would find seemed like an eternity. He kept his hands up, but quickly scooted out from under the tree. as soon as he was standing, the tree slammed into the ground, making him nearly jump out of his skin. Even more afraid now, Colin had run and run until he found something familiar, then made his way home again. Now Colin was back out in the wooded area and trying to use the powers he now was certain he had.
He didn't have any grand plans of becoming a superhero or anything, he simply wanted to find out what he could do. After hours and hours of attempts, he had finally managed to move some small logs, jump about twice the normal height, and it seemed as if he could teleport within ten feet. He stood there, in a small clearing and breathing heavily.

I felt the darkness as it tried to pull me down The kind of dark that haunts a hundred year old house Murmur was bored. Magic might have been back, but he'd still not really had anyone to go after. All of his targets were just out of reach, as it was now. Not to mention, he was sure his brother was just all over by now, protecting all those who Murmur intended to do wrong. As he thought about it, he realized there was one person his brother was still lacking knowledge about. Not Pan. The boy who had hit him in the head with a brick, sending him back to that god awful place he'd gotten loose from.
At first, he'd gone to check Not Pan's residence, after figuring out exactly where it was. With no luck of that, Murmur listened to the sounds being carried through the air, picking through many different voices. It seemed that were ever he was, he wasn't talking. That's when Murmur decided on going back to the place he'd been staying, conjuring up a locator spell off of the book Pan had seemed attached to when he'd first met him here.
With a smirk on his face almost the entire time, Murmur made his way into the forest as the spell directed him. There, he saw Not Pan. He was in a wide open clearly, showing that he was an easy target. The boy's back was turned, seeming distracted by something, and Murmur thought it would be the perfect time. With that, he threw his voice from behind a tree off in the opposite direction of himself. Only, it wasn't his voice, it was a much deeper one telling Pan, in a whisper, "you're going to die." Then, he threw it again to the right of him, then the left, and back to the right saying the same thing. Murmur wanted to confuse him, but more importantly, Murmur wanted him to know who he really was in case he'd planned on using any of those cheap tricks again.

Colin stood, breathing heavily. It felt like his body was trying to be something else, but simply wasn't getting there. He was fairly certain he could do more. Maybe not a lot more, or perhaps universes more. He had done some research while he was home, wanting to know if possibly there had been some kind of eclipse or other random happening in the few days before. He certainly didn't remember having anything.
According to comic books and mutant stuff he had found most things happened during puberty. He was well past that, so nothing seemed to make sense. It was driving him crazy, but he was also slightly happy. He didn't know where the powers were coming from, but he felt a bit of excitement at being special, and powerful. As he stood there in the clearing, hands on his sides as he attempted to catch his breath.
A terrifying voice whispered behind him and he whirled around, his eyes darting around, searching for the ominous voice. At least, he had believed he had heard a voice. For a second, he almost believed that it had been the wind and his exhaustion was simply getting the better of him. He didn't get a chance to study the wooded area, for as soon as he squinted he heard several more voices to his sides. He whirled left and right, then spun around. When he heard nothing, he began backing away in the direction that no voice had happened. He made it almost ten feet, then tripped over something and fell backwards into the dirt.
He was extremely lucky that he did not land on any rocks or anything, though the sudden impact momentarily stunned him. He quickly regained his senses and began scooting backwards along the ground. Then he was on his feet and running towards the treeline as if he were the lord of horses trying to show someone the meaning of haste. His heart was pounding at a thousand miles an hour in fear. Powers or no, an invisible person, monster, or whatever could talk to him and not be there was terrifying. |

I felt the darkness as it tried to pull me down The kind of dark that haunts a hundred year old house As Murmur stood, watching from the shadows of the trees, he couldn't help but chuckle as it appeared Colin had fallen over. This was already too easy. Even with magic back, this boy appeared to be nothing. It gave him an idea, however. Maybe it would be possible to beat Pan into him. He wasn't sure how deep this memory magic ran, but there had to be a way.
He took off running, and Murmur just shook his head. "Stop running, little mouse. You won't get very far." He projected his voice, causing it to seep into Colin's ear even from the distance that had been between him.
Rolling his head around and stretching out his shoulders, Murmur began to walk. He wasn't in a hurry to catch up to the boy for the chase could be just as fun. "Turn around!" He projected the sound of a threatening toned voice right in front of him very, very loudly. "I bet you missed me."
With that, Murmur walked just a little bit faster before he blinked a couple of times, getting an idea. He created a noise, like nails on a chalk board only louder and even more intense then average. Then, he let it slam into both of his ears. Murmur wondered if he would be able to withstand such a terrible noise, or if he was going to make him work harder as he proceeded in Colin's direction.

Colin hit the tree line feeling like an Olympic athlete on steroids with the gold at their finger tips. He jerked his head around as the voice spoke to him and nearly ran into a tree. Luckily, and with no actual skill, as he was not a woodland runner, he narrowly managed to not slam directly into it, though his shoulder connected and pain shot down his arm. He stumbled slightly as he looked back ahead, but managed to stay upright.
Then the voice spoke again and Colin panicked more, turning around and blasting a small hole about the size of his fist several inches into a tree behind him. He clutched his shoulder and looked around for the source of the voice. Just as he turned a sound that sent shivers down his spine even at is screeched in his ears. He closed his eyes and clutched his ears with both hands. He wasn't on an actual path, so there were many rocks, sticks, branches and roots around.
He didn't even manage to go more than a few feet before his foot caught on one of them, sending him tumbling down into a ditch he had not managed to see. He landed on his side, the wind knocked out of him and his hands still covering his ears, Colin just lay there for a moment. Then he opened his eyes, and scrambled out of the ditch on the other side, cringing at his ears still ringing. He felt lost, and the disorientation of falling with that sound in his ears confused him.
He simply stood there with his hand out, ready to use the little bit of power he had managed to figure out to fend off anything near him, spinning around slowly, his eyes and head darting back and forth. "What do you want from me!" His voice came out even more terrified and a bit higher pitched than he would have liked to think, or admit for that matter. "Stay away. S.s.s.stay away or... or... or I will blow you up. I am really powerful... and I will... uh.. will... will fight... and you won't have a good day."
If he had been watching this scene in a movie he would have laughed at the sad bravado and threatening of the main character to the obviously terrifying monster in the wood. |
